What is marketing?
Normally when thinking of marketing, the only things that come into mind are selling and advertising. What people don’t understand is that marketing is much more than that, it is the whole process of actually designing a product according to the target market by doing market research (consumer research), the pricing strategy, distribution channels and advertising. This is also known as the marketing mix or the four Ps which are Product, Price, Place and Promotion.
Marketing management in simple words is the management of a firm’s marketing resources, marketing strategies and activities involved to achieve the business goals.
Strategizing how you are going to market you product to a maximum within your resources is very important. Marketing strategy comes after you have defined your business goals. Depending on the size of your business you need to plan out how to increase customer base and brand awareness and to gain competitive advantage with in your budget. The marketing mix will be the next stage and the final stage is deciding the marketing activities and mediums you will use to achieve the marketing strategy.
In the past few decades marketing has radically evolved from just TV, radio, newspapers, magazines and billboards to a new era of marketing possibilities for advertising and promoting a product or service. The dawn of technology has made one 2 one and many 2 many marketing possible via internet, social media, mobile phones, electronic billboards and digital channels. The promotion of product or service via one or more forms of electronic media is classified as Digital Marketing.

Social Media is the aspect of digital marketing that has made it possible to advertise and promote services or products at an individual level. Social Media includes all the online tools and applications that allow people to create, share or exchange information, ideas, and pictures/videos in virtual communities and networks. In order to promote a brand it is important to create an online presence which will strengthen the brand awareness and boost its visibility also called Social Media Optimisation (SMO).
